Buy generic
Why buy name-brand, baby? You're just paying extra for the name, not the product. Wal-Mart has caught onto that philosophy and is expanding its generic drug program for old folks to 14 different states, selling the non-name brand stuff for $4 a pop. How's that for saving money? Dave Ramsey talks about saving dough all the time, and this program is living proof that if you buy small, you keep more of your cash.
Buying less-expensive stuff extends to a bunch of your other life areas. It can be part of your food budget, travel budget, and a bunch of others. You gonna sit there and tell me that you can taste the difference between Honey Nut Cheerios and Honey Oat cereal? Even if you can, it ain't worth forking over an extra 2 bucks a box for breakfast food. The less you spend, the more money you have in the budget that can be used to deep-six your debt and save, big-time.

My kids think WalMart's Great Value brand IS the brand name. We save lots of CASH on our grocery budget this way!
Hey....I'm new here and a first time reader at that so my comments may not be read, but just my humble opinion is that Walmart did a good thing. I thought the interviewee on the news, for Walmart, made an interesting statement in that the patient, with insurance, would still get the lower of the two prices...insurance rate or the $4 rate. HOWEVER, your physician should always be the guide in choosing generic meds, so ask first! Not all generics work as well as the main trade name for it...most do...but there are some specific generics that do not. Your doctor will know which one :)
Now, I can taste the difference between generic and name brand items and in most cases the savings is worth losing a bit in taste. But honestly some off-brand items are just...well...horrible! I would pay someone $2 not to make me eat some of the off brand things again...yuk!
However, if I were in debt, I could get over the bad taste. Oooh, better yet, I could not buy it in the first place and lose a little weight while saving money!
Good advice DEBTective.
Eating non name brand is fine in most things but as long as I can pay cash for it there is no replacing a good loaf of Oroweat bread. Name brand it is and taste it is.
